Back in 2013, my life was buzzing with joy as my daughter, Elyza, was born in August.
But as the year wound down, I faced the stress of expanding my Personal Training business and the new responsibilities of being a dad.
By December, I was a hefty 45lbs heavier!
This weight snuck up on me with a routine of takeaways, regular pints with my mates at the pub every Friday, and gym sessions that didn’t include much cardio.
In the changing room, I felt like a fraud. I'd been posting old pics of a fitter me online, not the version that was now three stone up. I realised the only person concerned about this was me.
The lifeguard likely didn't mind, nor should he. My focus should've been on enjoying the pool time with my daughter.
But it's tough, isn't it?
Gaining weight is one thing; the mental burden it brings is another beast entirely.
That New Year's Eve, with a cigar in one hand and what would be my last pint of Guinness for a while in the other, I made a vow to never let myself go like that again.
2014 was a year of revelations. For too long, I'd only ever got fit for a reason – a competition, a photoshoot, or an event.
This meant crash diets, overdoing it in the gym, and chasing goals that didn't last. Sure, having targets is great for focus, but not when they lead to unhealthy cycles.
It wasn't just about getting fit again; it was about staying fit.
By August 2014, I was not only in top form but also competing internationally in Las Vegas.
For a decade now, I've stayed shape.
